Junior Achievement (JA) and Cumulus Broadcasting held the 5th Annual JA Monopoly Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 13th at the Fire Station in Mandan. It was a huge success!
The tournament, crowned winners in three categories and helped to raise enough funds to reach 3,500 students in more than 150 classrooms throughout Bismarck-Mandan.
"This year, we were invited to Mandan, and the Mandan Fire Station held just a very cool vibe for everyone playing," says Sally Paulson, JA program director. “Everyone had a great time and we even had the opportunity to watch the firefighters go out on a few calls.”
The tournament, which is open to children in grade 4 through adults, pits players against each other through three age categories. “We work hard to make the event fun for all levels of players,” Paulson said. “Whether you’re an apprentice or tycoon, Richy Rich or Donald Trump, the JA Monopoly Tournament is an event worth attending."
Prizes were awarded to the top three players in each age category and included everything from gift cards to overnight excursions. The event also also included video gaming (Rock Band and Wii games)provided by Best Buy and Flight Simulators provided by Mike McHugh from the Bismarck Career Center for participants that were eliminated or people that prefered to play with nunchucks and drumsticks more than money.
In the championship round, the winners were crowned. They were: 4th-12th grade-Jaden Brandner, 9th-12th grade-Cole Kuester and Adults-Jeff Nygaard. Winners were also crowned for 2nd and 3rd places and in the consolation rounds.
Along with Cumulus Broadcasting, sponsors include: Wal-Mart North (Grand Prize Sponsor), Best Buy (Grand Prize Sponsor), 7 Seas Hotel and Waterpark (Grand Prize Sponsor), Ace Sprinkler Systems, Montana-Dakota Utilities, Berg's 24 Hr. Towing, Missouri Valley Petroleum, Brady, Martz & Associates, Bismarck State College, Dakota Carrier Network, Cloverdale Foods, Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson and Capital Trophy. Many, many in-kind donations were also received.
